Modern Mayr-Medicine

Modern Mayr-Medicine is based on the work of the Austrian physician Dr. Franz-Xaver Mayr (1875-1965).

Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to researching and treating the digestive system, specifically fasting as a medical therapy for various illnesses. His particular achievement lay in developing his own diagnostic criteria, which are known today as "Mayr diagnostics" or simply Mayr diagnostics. Since appropriate diagnostics are essential before any successful medical therapy, Mayr's contribution deserves special mention. This specific diagnostic method allows fasting to be successfully applied as an individualized therapeutic measure.

Further details can be found in his publications (Foundations of Diagnosis of Digestive Diseases) and in the textbook "Diagnostics according to Dr. FX Mayr" by Dr. Erich Rauch.

Medicine is constantly evolving, and Dr. Mayr was one of its many innovative pioneers, developing new insights and ideas. He also founded a working group for interested colleagues, one of whom deserves special mention: Medical Councilor Dr. Erich Rauch (1921-2003)

He recognized quite early on that Dr. Mayr's method required adaptations in some areas. He was instrumental in introducing a gentle elimination diet into the therapy. He had a brilliant and creative chef, Peter Mayr, at his side, who put his ideas into practice. The result is a range of delicious dishes that meet the requirements of a gentle diet and are now the foundation of all medical dietetics. Dr. Rauch also began incorporating micronutrients into the therapy. This became necessary because more and more people were exhibiting deficiencies in minerals, trace elements, and vitamins, while the therapy itself led to an increased need for and consumption of these nutrients. He was also the first to integrate naturopathic treatment approaches into inpatient Mayr therapy and to develop a curriculum for medical training.

In the early 1990s, a very fruitful collaboration began between Dr. Erich Rauch and Dr. Harald Stossier.

Both recognized the need to adapt traditional Mayr diagnostics and therapy and developed the concept of Modern Mayr-Medicine. This wasn't just a new term, but rather an expansion of Mayr diagnostics and therapy, incorporating Applied Kinesiology (later renamed Functional Myodiagnostics) into the diagnostic approach and, most importantly, Orthomolecular Medicine into the therapeutic approach. At that time, Dr. Stossier was a consultant for complementary medicine in the professional association, and he succeeded in obtaining a diploma from the Austrian Medical Association for these methods. This fulfilled a major concern of Dr. Mayr's vision has been fulfilled – his method has gained recognition in the medical field – and, at the same time, a continuing education guideline has been established to ensure the quality of knowledge transfer from the insights of Modern Mayr-Medicine to the next generation of physicians.

Today, Modern Mayr-Medicine is therefore a symbiosis of traditional Mayr diagnostics and therapy, expanded and complemented in this area by Functional Myodiagnostics and in the therapeutic area by all aspects of Orthomolecular Medicine.

The foundation of Modern Mayr-Medicine lies in Dr. Mayr's insights, his view of disease development (Mayr pathogenesis), the disruption of intestinal function—which he termed self-poisoning from the gut (intestinal autointoxication), now known as leaky gut—and the therapeutic principles of a reorientation of eating culture.

The diagnostic expansion of Functional Myodiagnostics offers patients a simple and readily apparent way to quickly identify various food intolerances and dysbiosis, uncover hidden weaknesses, and implement appropriate therapeutic measures.

Through Orthomolecular Medicine, we recognize the importance of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements—collectively referred to as micronutrients—for health and the treatment of disease. It would be considered malpractice to conduct Modern Mayr Therapy today without supplementing these nutrients.

Thus, Modern Mayr-Medicine is important and successful in two respects:

For preserving health, which is becoming increasingly important – it allows for early decisions to be made in the best interests of one's health. Fasting is the only method that has been proven to prolong life while maintaining health. For these findings, the Japanese researcher Yoshinori Ōsumi was even awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2016.

And secondly, for treating ailments and manifest diseases.

The indications for its use are numerous, and it is recommended to contact an experienced Mayr physician in specific cases.

It is also important that the insights of Modern Mayr-Medicine are integrated into everyday life, which we now call the Mayr Principle. This makes it possible to incorporate the most important cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle and diet into everyday life and to maintain one's health, vitality and performance in all areas.
